Travel With Your Matcha Habit
Yes, I have made a matcha on a plane.
Airport matcha is a gamble and I keep losing. It's either twelve dollars, the colour of a manila folder, or both. At some point I stopped hoping and started bringing my own, and I have not looked back.
This is not a big production. It's four things in the front pocket of my bag and about two minutes of effort. I've done it on flights, in hotel rooms with no bowls, and at a few places where I definitely should have just had a water.
What goes in the matcha travel kit
Made for exactly this. It's small enough to live in your bag and you're not gambling your entire supply on baggage handling.
So easy. One button and you're done. Just change the batteries before travel day, not on the plane, when you have already committed.
Gives you the perfect serve every time. I know you think you can eyeball it. I thought that too, and then I made something I had to drink out of politeness to myself.
Optional. I just like it. It gives movie core main character energy and I'm not going to apologise for that.
If you don't own the bits yet, the Starter Kit has the whisk, the scoop and the tumbler in one go, which saves you doing three separate internet deep dives at 1am.
The whole kit lives next to my passport, which probably says something about my priorities.
How to make matcha on a plane
The trick is doing it before the trolley comes past, not during. Nobody needs you running a full tea ceremony while someone behind you is waiting on a gin.
Matcha on a Plane
- ½ teaspoon Morning Made Unsweetened matcha
- A splash of warm water (ask for warm, not boiling)
- Cold water, or the milk from the coffee service
- Ice, if you're lucky enough to be offered it
Request a small cup of warm water and a cup of cold. Say please. Everyone on that plane is doing a lot.
Half a teaspoon into the tumbler, add just enough warm water to cover it, then whisk or shake until there are no clumps. Hold the lid down properly. Cabin pressure is real and so is the person next to you.
Add the cold water or milk, lid back on, one more shake. Ice if you've got it.
Turbulence and open cups are not friends. Learn from me.
Same method works in a hotel room with the kettle, just let the water sit for a minute so it isn't boiling.
I've filmed the whole thing, because explaining it in writing makes it sound harder than it is. Watch on TikTok.

No sugar, no fuss, and it works with whatever milk you can get your hands on at 30,000 feet.
