What actually is L-Theanine?

MATCHA 101

What actually is L-Theanine?

It's on our tin, and I know you want to know. So I found out.

I've said the word L-theanine confidently for about two years. Then someone asked me what it was and I said "it's the calm one" like that meant anything. So here's the actual answer.

It's an amino acid. Not a stimulant, not a herb, not something invented in 2019. It occurs naturally in the tea plant and almost nowhere else in your diet, which is why nobody mentioned it until tea got trendy.

L-theanine

An amino acid you'll basically only get from tea. It's what gives matcha its smooth, savoury taste, and it's one of the few things you drink that actually reaches your brain.

Our matcha comes from Uji in Kyoto, and the part that matters there isn't the romance, it's the shade. In full sun, tea plants turn L-theanine into catechins, which are the bitter compounds. So growers cover the plants for weeks before harvest. Less light, less breakdown, more amino acids. That's most of what ceremonial grade actually means.

And because matcha is the ground leaf instead of a steeped one, you drink everything the plant made rather than binning it.

Half a teaspoon of Unsweetened, or a full teaspoon of the sweetened blends.

A takeaway flat white is around 95mg of caffeine and zero L-theanine. Not a bit less. None. Coffee plants don't make it.

Caffeine works by blocking the receptors that tell you you're tired. L-theanine works on the other side, nudging the neurotransmitters tied to calm and attention. Studies that look at the two together tend to find better focus and less of the buzzing than caffeine alone. In matcha they turn up in the same mouthful, already paired.

Caffeine speeds you up. L-theanine seems to stop it from making you feel unhinged about it.

Attention

The strongest finding. A review of 31 randomised trials found a single 200mg dose improved reaction time on attention tasks.

Stress and sleep

Doses of 200 to 400mg are linked to lower stress without sedation, and to better sleep quality rather than longer sleep. Real, just smaller than the internet implies.

The catch

Those are supplement doses, well above what any cup of tea delivers. So a matcha isn't a clinical dose and I'm not going to pretend it is.

Same leaf, same region. Unsweetened is pure matcha. The sweetened blends are matcha plus organic cane sugar, which is why they take a full teaspoon instead of half. Pick the one you'll actually drink every day.

Until my next questionable idea.
